Los Estados Unidos, por aquel entonces, daban contratos postales a una sola empresa por ruta, y los concursos los hab\u00eda ganado Pan American.<\/p>\n<p>Eran buenos contratos para las empresas. Les aseguraban exclusividad y, originalmente, les asignaban un pago de dos d\u00f3lares por milla volada, a cambio del transporte de correspondencia. Hab\u00eda que hacer grandes inversiones en infraestructura en tierras lejanas, pero el pago era bueno y, adicionalmente, les daba la posibilidad de tener otros ingresos con el transporte de pasajeros y carga.<\/p>\n<p>A cambio de esto, las empresas que hac\u00edan servicios internacionales ten\u00edan prohibido hacer vuelos dom\u00e9sticos, y pod\u00edan operar en muy pocos aeropuertos norteamericanos. Desde el punto de vista del correo, acostumbrado a los trasbordos desde un siglo atr\u00e1s, esto no era un problema, pero para los pasajeros internacionales era una complicaci\u00f3n. Esta imposici\u00f3n se mantuvo para Pan American hasta la desregulaci\u00f3n de 1978, y fue uno de los problemas m\u00e1s graves que tuvo la empresa en toda su historia.<\/p>\n<p>Pero los beneficios del monopolio del transporte a\u00e9reo internacional con bandera norteamericana eran grandes, y Pan American fue un imperio mundial.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, en todos los reg\u00edmenes fuertes y estrictos hay filtraciones, y el sistema aeron\u00e1utico norteamericano tambi\u00e9n las tuvo. Estos casos suelen tener dos perfiles, el de los grandes que salen a pelear con todas las armas (para Pan American fueron TWA y American Overseas Airlines) y el de los chiquitos, que pasan desapercibidos hasta que uno descubre que ya est\u00e1n instalados. En este caso fueron Delta Airlines, que era una empresa de fumigaci\u00f3n que empez\u00f3 a hacer transporte en peque\u00f1a escala y Braniff, una empresa de transporte de pasajeros que se desarroll\u00f3 sin interferir con las cuatro grandes (American, Eastern, Transcontinental &amp; Western y United), y fue beneficiada por una decisi\u00f3n pol\u00edtica de crearle alguna competencia a Pan American despu\u00e9s del fin de la guerra. As\u00ed lleg\u00f3 hasta Buenos Aires, en 1950.<\/p>\n<p>Pero la llegada de Braniff a la Argentina \u2014en un momento en que era com\u00fan la aparici\u00f3n de nuevos operadores\u2014 no fue igual a la de las dem\u00e1s, primero porque rompi\u00f3 con lo que para el imaginario local era un monopolio natural, y segundo, y quiz\u00e1s m\u00e1s importante porque, en una \u00e9poca en que no exist\u00edan las computadoras y las comunicaciones eran primitivas, dio a los pasajeros la posibilidad de llegar a su destino final en Estados Unidos utilizando una \u00fanica empresa que atend\u00eda los trasbordos como cosa propia y no depend\u00eda de convenios interlineales.<\/p>\n<p>El posicionamiento de Braniff en la Argentina fue un esfuerzo publicitario importante, pero luego del impacto inicial se mantuvo con avisos medianos y peque\u00f1os, muchos muy parecidos al que mostramos hoy, un pie de p\u00e1gina diminuto a una columna, que fue publicado en el diario <em>Democracia<\/em> el 9 de agosto de 1950. Dice lo que puede decir un aviso de una l\u00ednea a\u00e9rea, pero tiene una frase que ofrece algo especial: \u201c\u00fanica l\u00ednea que opera hasta, hacia y dentro de los EE,UU.\u201d.
