Propulsado inicialmente por cuatro motores Wright \u201cCyclone\u201d 972TC, y R3350 de 18 cilindros, en doble estrella, ten\u00eda una autonom\u00eda de 9400 Km, una longitud de 34,65 metros, una envergadura de 37,49 metros, una velocidad m\u00e1xima de 596 Km\/h y una configuraci\u00f3n de 59 a 99 plazas, siendo inconfundible por su triple deriva y su fuselaje con forma de delf\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p>En 1939 la aerol\u00ednea TWA (Trans World Airlines), bajo la influencia de Howard Hughes (su accionista mayoritario) solicit\u00f3 a Lockheed un avi\u00f3n comercial transcontinental (que pudiera ir de costa a costa de los Estados Unidos), para unos 40 pasajeros, y con una autonom\u00eda de 5,630 kil\u00f3metros; excediendo por un gran margen los requerimientos de TWA, \u201cnaci\u00f3\u201d el L-1049.<\/p>\n<p>Se proyect\u00f3 para ser el primer avi\u00f3n comercial presurizado, aunque sin embargo, y debido a las circunstancias que se desarrollaron mientras se encontraba en construcci\u00f3n, fu\u00e9 superado por el Boeing-307 en ser el primer avi\u00f3n de pasajeros en ofrecer dicha caracter\u00edstica al p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n<p>La cola del avi\u00f3n con sus mencionados tres estabilizadores verticales. le permit\u00eda mantener baja su altura total para poder entrar en los hangares existentes, incorporando tambi\u00e9n novedosos sistemas como calefacci\u00f3n el\u00e9ctrica para deshielo en los bordes de ataque de las alas y estabilizadores. As\u00ed como controles asistidos hidr\u00e1ulicamente.<\/p>\n<p>El primer prototipo efectu\u00f3 su vuelo inicial el nueve de enero de 1943 haci\u00e9ndolo el primer aparato de serie el 14 de julio de 1951 y obteniendo la certificaci\u00f3n en noviembre del mismo a\u00f1o. Entr\u00f3 en servicio comercial en diciembre con un vuelo de Eastern de Miami a Nueva York.<\/p>\n<p>Desde 1943 Lockheed estudiaba la posibilidad de desarrollar una variante del \u201cConstellation\u201d, el \u201cSuper Constellation\u201d, cuatro metros m\u00e1s largo, utilizado adem\u00e1s por l\u00edneas comerciales, la US Navy y la USAF.<\/p>\n<p>Pensado y dise\u00f1ado para competir con el Douglas DC-6 como avi\u00f3n de transporte y AWACS, y con el DC-6B que pod\u00eda llegar a transportar 23 pasajeros m\u00e1s que el L-1049.<\/p>\n<p>En 1950 Lockheed recompr\u00f3 a Hughes Tool Company el prototipo XC-69 que estaba equipado con cuatro motores radiales Pratt &amp; Whitney R-2800 en lugar de las plantas de potencia Wright R-3350 que utilizaban los modelos en producci\u00f3n. Lockheed alarg\u00f3 5.5 metros el XC-69, lo que ser\u00eda la base del nuevo L-1049 \u201cSuper Constellation\u201d. Este nuevo modelo de la \u201cfamilia Constellation\u201c, inclu\u00eda modificaciones sustanciales, como mayor capacidad de combustible mejoras en la calefacci\u00f3n y una m\u00e1s eficiente presurizaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En 1953 el motor R3350 \u201cTurbo\u201d estaba disponible para su utilizaci\u00f3n civil, y Loockhead lo incorpor\u00f3 como planta de potencia en la nueva versi\u00f3n L-1049C que efectu\u00f3 su primer vuelo el 17 de febrero dicho a\u00f1o, consiguiendo mejorar las prestaciones de su competido el DC-6B, en particular una mayor velocidad de crucero, tasa de ascenso y carga de pago adem\u00e1s de un menor ruido en cabina.<\/p>\n<p>En agosto de 1954 una versi\u00f3n carguera, el L-1049D. vol\u00f3 por ptimera vez; utilizaba dos puertas para carga en el costado izquierdo y un piso reforzado como el utilizado en el R7V-1, variante militar del L-1049B. El L-1059D pod\u00eda transportar 16745 kilogramos de carga de pago en sus bodegas de 158 metros c\u00fabicos. Un centenar de L-1049G fueron utilizados por 16 aerol\u00edneas, efectuando su primer vuelo el 17 de diciembre de 1954 entrando en servicio en TWA y Northwest en 1955. Entre otras mejoras, contaba con el sistema de radionavegaci\u00f3n LORAN, radar metereol\u00f3ogico y la posibilidad de montarle dep\u00f3sitos de combustible auxiliares en las puntas de los planos.<\/p>\n<p>El L-1049H, conocido como \u201cSuper H\u201d y \u201cHusky\u201d fue otra variante del L-1049C basado en su fuselaje y con componentes del L-1049G. Convertible pasaje \/ carga pod\u00eda transportar hasta 120 pasajeros.<\/p>\n<h2>Operadores civiles<\/h2>\n<p>El primer pedido para su uso civil lo hizo Eastern Airlines con 10 unidades seguido de TWA con 14 aparatos, siendo destacable la variante \u201cSiesta\u201d que pod\u00eda transportar 47 pasajeros, la conocida como \u201cImtercontinental\u201d para 54 \/ 60, y la llamada \u201cInterurban\u201d capaz de transportar hasta 105 pasajeros.<\/p>\n<p>Se llegaron a producir 550 aparatos operados en sus versiones civiles, entre otras, por Aeropostal Venezolana, Air France, Air India, Avianca, Cubana de Aviaci\u00f3n, Iberia, KLM y Quantas, siendo as\u00ed mismo, el avi\u00f3n presidencial del presidente estadounidense Dwight D. Eisenhower y el primero en ser designado como \u00abAir Force One\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h2>El Connie en Iberia<\/h2>\n<p>Iberia oper\u00f3 diez unidades L-1049 utilizadas en sus rutas transatl\u00e1nticas entre 1954 y 1988: EC-AIN \u201cSanta Mar\u00eda\u201d, EC-AIO \u201cNi\u00f1a\u201d; EC-AIP \u201cPinta\u201d. EC-AMP \u201cSan Juan\u201d, EC-AMQ \u201cPalos de Moguer\u201d, EC-AQL \u201cLa Confiada\u201d, EC-AQM \u201cla Garza\u201d, EC-AQN \u201cLa R\u00e1bida\u201d, EC-ARN \u201cSantiago\u201d y \u201cLa Deseada\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La l\u00ednea a\u00e9rea de bandera espa\u00f1ola recibi\u00f3 el primer aparato en junio de 1954, realizando el vuelo inaugural el tres de agosto en la ruta entre Madrid y el aeropuerto de Idlewild, en Nueva York (hoy conocido como JFK) con escala en Azores transportando 53 invitados, precisamente el mismo d\u00eda que Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n partiera del Puerto de Palos rumbo a las Am\u00e9ricas 462 a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p>El primer vuelo comercial se llev\u00f3 a cabo el nueve de agosto como IB-953, tripulado por los pilotos Ceciio Imaz y Hermenegildo Men\u00e9ndez, los mec\u00e1nicos de vuelo Joaqu\u00edn Bey y Cirilo Blanco, los \u201cradios\u201d Angel Gutierrez y Manuel Rosal con un servicio a bordo a cargo de Pilar Mascias, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Pe\u00f1a, Fernando Ruiz Escribano y Fernando Llanos que se encargaron de servir un men\u00fa a elecci\u00f3n entre ocho platos fr\u00edos y calientes.<\/p>\n<p>En referencia al EC-ARN \u201cSantiago\u201d, tambi\u00e9n fue operado por AVIACO como \u201cch\u00e1rter\u201d a Canarias en los veranos de 1.963 y 1964 y convertido a \u201ccombi\u201d por Air France en Toulouse volando como tal hasta mayo de 1967.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"1140\" data-carousel-extra='{&quot;blog_id&quot;:1,&quot;permalink&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.gacetaeronautica.com\\\/gaceta\\\/wp-101\\\/el-lockheed-l-1049-constellation\\\/&quot;,&quot;likes_blog_id&quot;:26943182}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 1140px; Otras compa\u00f1\u00edas de la zona que lo operaron fueron L\u00ednea Aeropostal Venezolana, Avianca, Varig, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Las \u00faltimas cinco unidades, se vendieron a Miami International Aerodyne en 1966.
