Eran algo m\u00e1s de 10.000 kil\u00f3metros en Boeing 707\/387B y no eran una ruta f\u00e1cil. Exig\u00edan volar a la m\u00e1xima cota posible y cuidar la velocidad para reducir el consumo, lo que hac\u00eda que el avi\u00f3n no fuera f\u00e1cil de llevar. Con todo, a veces no llegaban y hac\u00edan una escala t\u00e9cnica en las Canarias o en las islas de la Sal. Seg\u00fan contaban los pilotos de aqu\u00e9lla \u00e9poca, en el aeropuerto de Las Palmas hab\u00eda mejores comodidades para los pasajeros, pero en la segunda alternativa, que era un aeropuerto con muy poco tr\u00e1fico, la atenci\u00f3n a la aeronave era m\u00e1s r\u00e1pida y sencilla.<\/p>\n<p>Estos vuelos de Aerol\u00edneas eran la excepci\u00f3n y no la regla de las rutas europeas a Buenos Aires. Iberia no pudo hacer lo mismo con sus DC-8, y siempre debi\u00f3 programar escalas, y el resto de las empresas europeas, ni siquiera pensaron en la posibilidad, porque la escala para repostar era inevitable con los aviones del momento.<\/p>\n<p>La elecci\u00f3n del punto intermedio siempre es una cuesti\u00f3n compleja, que combina los costos intr\u00ednsecos de cada escala, el desv\u00edo requerido, los horarios de operaci\u00f3n, la posibilidad de hacer tr\u00e1fico de quinta libertad, el eventual atractivo tur\u00edstico del lugar y muchos m\u00e1s. En aquellos tiempos las preferidas en las rutas que nos ocupan eran R\u00edo de Janeiro, Dakar, las islas Canarias o de la Sal, Freetown y alguna otra. Mientras que Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas era muy clara sobre su vuelo sin escalas, algunas empresas eran confusas para hablar de sus escalas t\u00e9cnicas y algunas, pocas, trataban de ganar algo con estos destinos. Iberia promocion\u00f3 bastante las Canarias entre nosotros.<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa eligi\u00f3 como escala t\u00e9cnica Casablanca, en Marruecos, y resalt\u00f3 sus posibilidades tur\u00edsticas, innegables pero desconocidas en Argentina. Por el otro lado, el chador no desapareci\u00f3, y las costumbres isl\u00e1micas progresaron de un modo totalmente distinto del que pensaban los publicistas de Lufthansa.
