Viv\u00eda junto con otros estudiantes en la zona de Lake Worth, a solo un lago de distancia de la base Carswell. Desde all\u00ed operaban escuadrones de F-16, F\/A-18 y Hercules. En ese lugar estaba y sigue estando una f\u00e1brica de Lockheed Martin a la que lamentablemente no pude acceder durante mi estad\u00eda. <\/p>\n<p>La instrucci\u00f3n que recib\u00eda era en aviones C-172 y como Meacham estaba a solo 5 millas n\u00e1uticas al Noreste de Carswell era com\u00fan sobrevolar la base a\u00e9rea, dado que a pocas millas al Este estaba el gigantesco aeropuerto Dallas Fort Worth y su espacio a\u00e9reo clase Bravo que solo pod\u00eda penetrarse en vuelos instrumentales (IFR). <\/p>\n<p>Por esa raz\u00f3n casi todos los vuelos de instrucci\u00f3n sal\u00edan de Meacham e iban hacia el Oeste, tanto hacia el Noroeste donde estaba la zona de trabajo (donde los alumnos pilotos aprend\u00edan las maniobras b\u00e1sicas de vuelo como virajes, vuelo lento o p\u00e9rdidas de sustentaci\u00f3n) como hac\u00eda el Sud Oeste donde hab\u00eda muchos aeropuertos con radioayudas (VOR\/ADF e ILS) para practicar vuelo instrumental. <\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gacetaeronautica.com\/gaceta\/wp-101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fworth1.jpg?w=1140\"> <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">En la imagen satelital puede observarse con claridad la ubicaci\u00f3n de la base a\u00e9rea de Carwell, junto a la fabrica de Lockheed-Martin, y el aeropuerto de Meacham (foto Europe Technologies \/ Google Earth).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Siendo ya entonces un fan\u00e1tico de la aviaci\u00f3n militar yo programaba todos los vuelos que pod\u00eda para sobrevolar Carswell. Esta man\u00eda no quedaba atemperada al ir a casa luego de los entrenamientos dado que la pileta del complejo donde viv\u00eda daba a la base. Pas\u00e9 muchas tardes agradables mirando como los aviones locales hac\u00edan circuitos, que se amenizaban con el ocasional B-52 que iba de visita, adem\u00e1s de los T-38 y T-37 que pasaban rutinariamente.<br \/>Pasar una ma\u00f1ana mirando mi propio show a\u00e9reo era aliciente suficiente (como si lo necesitara) para ir luego a estudiar reglamentaci\u00f3n, aerodin\u00e1mica y procedimientos de vuelo por instrumentos. <\/p>\n<p>En una memorable ocasi\u00f3n sobrevolaba Carswell con 2000 pies (o sea a unos 600 metros de altura) cuando vi pasar abajo m\u00edo un B-52 haciendo una aproximaci\u00f3n a la base. El rugido de sus 8 motores Pratt &amp; Whitney de 17.000 libras de empuje cada uno, humill\u00f3 tristemente a nuestro humilde Lycoming de 160 HP de potencia. <\/p>\n<p>Pero el sobrevuelo m\u00e1s inolvidable de la base fue una tarde de invierno en que volv\u00eda de una navegaci\u00f3n volando un Cessna 172 con el indicativo N996.<br \/>Mientras sobrevolamos la base la torre de Carswell nos avis\u00f3:<br \/>&#8211; <em>Cessna niner niner six, Carswell, you have traffic six O\u00b4clock. Has you in sight? Will be overshooting<\/em> (tr\u00e1fico detr\u00e1s suyo los tiene a la vista y los va a pasar).<br \/>Nuestra respuesta fue:<br \/>&#8211; <em>Cessna niner niner six, looking<\/em>. Mientras intent\u00e1bamos ver detr\u00e1s nuestro, algo bastante dif\u00edcil en un Cessna 172.  <\/p>\n<p>De pronto vimos un F-16 que nos pasaba por la izquierda a unos doscientos metros de distancia y a la misma altura. No deb\u00eda ir muy r\u00e1pido pero en comparaci\u00f3n con nuestros 80 nudos parec\u00edamos estar parados en el aire. El avi\u00f3n pas\u00f3 por delante, d\u00e1ndonos una incre\u00edble vista de su tobera y una milla m\u00e1s adelante hizo un giro a la derecha cruzando nuestra l\u00ednea de vuelo. En diez segundos hab\u00eda desaparecido y dej\u00f3 a su estela dos pilotos civiles que mientras sobrevolaban el olor a JP5 dejado por el caza so\u00f1aban con volar una de esas incre\u00edbles aeronaves. <\/p>\n<p>Pero pronto Carswell nos pas\u00f3 al control de Meacham e iniciamos el descenso.
