Para muchos historiadores fue el primer bombardeo estrat\u00e9gico de la historia aeromilitar.<\/p>\n<p>Antes de esa fecha la Segunda Rep\u00fablica Espa\u00f1ola hab\u00eda encargado al pintor Pablo Picasso la ejecuci\u00f3n de un cuadro de gran formato (3,5 por casi ocho metros) para ser expuesto en el pabell\u00f3n espa\u00f1ol de la proyectada exposici\u00f3n internacional de Par\u00eds. El artista hizo algunos bocetos, casi al azar, pero el bombardeo lo decidi\u00f3 a que \u00e9ste fuera el tema central de la futura obra, que estuvo concluida en junio de 1937. Picasso decidi\u00f3 entonces que quedara en custodia del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York hasta que la democracia volviera a Espa\u00f1a, lo que no impidi\u00f3 que la obra fuera exhibida en otros pa\u00edses, incluso Brasil, en 1953.<\/p>\n<p>La Guerra Civil termin\u00f3 en 1939, con la derrota de la Rep\u00fablica. Francisco Franco, el jefe del movimiento revolucionario, fue proclamado \u201ccaudillo de Espa\u00f1a por la gracia de Dios\u201d y asumi\u00f3 como jefe del gobierno, cargo que retendr\u00eda hasta su muerte, en 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Fueron 36 a\u00f1os en los que Espa\u00f1a, estuvo sumida en una cruel dictadura que la fue alejando del mundo, que la segreg\u00f3, primero por sus simpat\u00edas con el nazismo y luego por la falta de democracia. El pa\u00eds vivi\u00f3 en una crisis m\u00e1s o menos permanente, pol\u00edticamente aislado y con poco progreso material.<\/p>\n<h2>Iberia<\/h2>\n<p>Iberia fue fundada por Horacio Echeberrieta, asociado con Lufthansa, en 1927. Poco despu\u00e9s volaba a Alemania con subsidios. Dentro de la divisi\u00f3n de la pol\u00edtica europea de aquellos a\u00f1os, era una empresa filonazi.<\/p>\n<p>En 1929 el gobierno espa\u00f1ol la incluy\u00f3 dentro de un holding aeron\u00e1utico llamado CLASSA (Concesionaria de L\u00edneas A\u00e9reas Subvencionadas), que fue nacionalizado por la Rep\u00fablica. Terminada la contienda la empresa, por el imperio de las circunstancias, result\u00f3 ser la l\u00ednea a\u00e9rea espa\u00f1ola, que tuvo un muy discreto crecimiento por varios a\u00f1os. En 1944 fue nacionalizada y a partir de esa fecha inaugur\u00f3 servicios de largo aliento a Buenos Aires (1946) y Estados Unidos (1954).<\/p>\n<p>En los a\u00f1os siguientes, el gobierno espa\u00f1ol impuls\u00f3 el turismo receptivo, una de las pocas actividades econ\u00f3micas en las que el pa\u00eds ten\u00eda ventajas ciertas, y para ello fortaleci\u00f3 a Iberia, que reequip\u00f3 su flota y aument\u00f3 sus servicios internacionales.<\/p>\n<p>La publicidad hist\u00f3rica de Iberia nunca estuvo vinculada con el arte espa\u00f1ol, y sus valores en materia de hispanidad han sido escasos. Fue dif\u00edcil, pero fue posible.<\/p>\n<p>El pa\u00eds vivi\u00f3 un proceso de gran apertura, que se evidenci\u00f3, al principio, por un gran renacer del sector art\u00edstico, en todos los aspectos.<\/p>\n<p>Picasso hab\u00eda muerto en 1973 pero, con la llegada de la nueva monarqu\u00eda, fue evidente que hab\u00eda llegado el momento adecuado para que el Guernica viajara a Espa\u00f1a, donde nunca hab\u00eda estado.
