El aparato ha estado en servicio desde 1974 y continuar\u00e1 sirviendo a la Fuerza A\u00e9rea de los EE.UU. (USAF, o <em>United States Air Force<\/em>) hasta bien entrada la d\u00e9cada de 2020. Es el \u00fanico modelo dedicado a la misi\u00f3n de apoyo a\u00e9reo cercano (<em>CAS<\/em>, o <em>close air support<\/em> en la jerga inglesa) y cuenta con varias caracter\u00edsticas inusuales que le permiten cumplir ese objetivo.<\/p>\n<p>Las experiencias de la Guerra de Vietnam puntualizaron que hac\u00eda falta una aeronave dedicada a la misi\u00f3n CAS. Si bien varios modelos, tales como el\u00a0A-1 Skyraider, el F-4 Phantom y el A-7D Corsair, se emplearon en ese rol, no hab\u00edan sido dise\u00f1ados para ese prop\u00f3sito. Por ello, en marzo de 1967, la USAF emiti\u00f3 un requerimiento para que 21 compa\u00f1\u00edas\u00a0presentaran propuestas para construir una aeronave de ataque de bajo costo designada proyecto A-X. Un nuevo requerimiento (final) se emiti\u00f3 en mayo de 1970 detallando necesidades espec\u00edficas y proponiendo, por primera vez en varios a\u00f1os, una competencia en vuelo entre los dos finalistas seleccionados por la instituci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En agosto de 1970, seis empresas entregaron sus propuestas formales para desarrollar el contrato A-X. Fairchild Republic Company estaba entre la seis postulantes y su situaci\u00f3n era bastante precaria. Fairchild Republic decidi\u00f3 presentar un modelo (designado A-10) que ser\u00eda m\u00e1s representativo de un ejemplar operativo, mientras que Northrop se jug\u00f3 por un prototipo convencional que hubiese requerido varios ajustes para ingresar en la l\u00ednea de producci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>El A-9 ten\u00eda una apariencia bastante convencional, con alas montadas sobre el dorso, motores instalados en el fuselaje bajo las alas y un tim\u00f3n vertical \u00fanico. \u00a0El A-10, por su parte, era mucho m\u00e1s radical ya que portaba los motores sobre la parte posterior del fuselaje y empleaba un conjunto tim\u00f3n cantilever doble. Fairchild coloc\u00f3 los motores en esa peculiar ubicaci\u00f3n para incrementar la supervivencia de los motores manteni\u00e9ndolos lejos de objetos extra\u00f1os en la pista y protegi\u00e9ndolos del fuego anti-a\u00e9reo enemigo, como as\u00ed tambi\u00e9n sirviendo de escudo contra sensores infrarrojos. Para asegurar la supervivencia del A-10 y su \u00fanico tripulante, su dise\u00f1o contemplaba el uso de una \u00abba\u00f1adera\u00bb con paredes de titanio de 2,54 cm de espesor que proteger\u00eda al piloto y varios cables de control de vuelo cr\u00edticos del fuego antia\u00e9reo. Tambi\u00e9n contemplaba el revestimiento de las celdas de combustible con espuma bal\u00edstica que se humedec\u00edan con combustible y preven\u00edan incendios en caso que aquellas recibieran un impacto directo de artiller\u00eda antia\u00e9rea incendiaria. Los controles de vuelo estaban triplicados y doble sistema hidr\u00e1ulico redundante respaldado por un sistema de cables que pod\u00eda ser empleado en caso de una p\u00e9rdida completa del fluido hidr\u00e1ulico (la validez de esta funcionalidad, en particular, se demostrar\u00edan a\u00f1os mas tarde en acciones b\u00e9licas).<\/p>\n<p>El A-10 era un avi\u00f3n esencialmente construido alrededor de un ca\u00f1\u00f3n. El montaje de ese ca\u00f1\u00f3n consist\u00eda de siete tubos de casi 6 metros de largo que se conectaban con un inmenso tambor de municiones instalado dentro del fuselaje del avi\u00f3n. Los ingenieros de Fairchild Republic innovaron al colocar el tren de nariz fuera de la l\u00ednea central del fuselaje para as\u00ed poder colocar los extensos tubos del ca\u00f1\u00f3n y permitir que aquel cupiera en el fuselaje cuando se retra\u00eda. El ca\u00f1\u00f3n propiamente dicho pod\u00eda disparar a alta o baja velocidad. Su m\u00e1xima tasa de tiro era de 4.000 disparos por minuto y el tambor de municiones pod\u00eda contener hasta 1.350 cartuchos.<\/p>\n<p>En enero de 1973, se anunci\u00f3 que\u00a0Fairchild Republic ganaba la competencia. Una de las razones por la que el A-10 result\u00f3 ganador fue que el prototipo fue construido para ser mucho m\u00e1s representativo del modelo de serie, lo que reduc\u00eda los obst\u00e1culos para poner la l\u00ednea de producci\u00f3n en marcha. Sin embargo, primero hubo que sortear algunos problemas pol\u00edticos dado que la poderosa delegaci\u00f3n tejana en el congreso pretend\u00eda que se empleara el A-7D Corsair II, que Vought constru\u00eda en ese estado, en la misi\u00f3n CAS. La presencia del A-10 en Europa pretend\u00eda servir de contrapeso para las masas de tanques del Pacto de Varsovia que lideraba la Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica. El modelo iba camino al retiro de la USAF cuando, en 1991, se lo envi\u00f3 al Oriente Medio para integrarse a la Operaci\u00f3n \u00abDesert Storm\u00bb que liberar\u00eda a Kuwait de la invasi\u00f3n iraqu\u00ed.
