Si bien no cuenta con servicios de transporte aerocomercial regular ya que est\u00e1 demasiado cerca del aeropuerto internacional de la ciudad de Charlotte, Hickory Regional (c\u00f3digo KHKY en nomenclatura de la OACI) registra m\u00e1s de 100 operaciones a\u00e9reas diarias (promedio) y cuenta con dos edificios terminales: La del aeropuerto propiamente dicha (construida en 1960) y la de Cannon Aviation, una terminal a\u00e9rea para vuelos ejecutivos.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de la aparente monoton\u00eda que propone un t\u00edpico aer\u00f3dromo de aviaci\u00f3n general como este, Hickory Regional resalta por la presencia de un peque\u00f1o pero atractivo museo aeron\u00e1utico creado por vecinos de la localidad y su zona de influencia. El museo propiamente dicho se encuentra ubicado en el lado sudoeste del edificio y all\u00ed se muestran artefactos y recuerdos que van desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta la actualidad. All\u00ed, impresiona distintivamente una exhibici\u00f3n sobre los hermanos <strong>Bill y George Preddy<\/strong>, pilotos nativos de Carolina del Norte ca\u00eddos en combate mientras tripulaban cazas P-51 Mustang en Europa entre 1944 y 1945. Pero tambi\u00e9n se pueden encontrar otras muestras de su colecci\u00f3n en el propio hall de entrada, algunas oficinas en desuso o el bar de la terminal. La antigua sala de retiro de equipajes, por su parte, aloja el <strong>\u00abAnexo de la Aviaci\u00f3n Naval\u00bb<\/strong>, donde se aprecian un pod de cameras de F-14, ca\u00f1ones Vulcan calibre 20 mm, varios misiles aire-aire y uniformes de la Armada y los Infantes de Marina.<\/p>\n<p>Saliendo del museo por una puerta vidriada se accede a su <strong>\u00abL\u00ednea de Vuelo\u00bb<\/strong>, un sector de 100 m x 50 m de la plataforma de vuelo del aeropuerto que el museo emplea para la exhibici\u00f3n est\u00e1tica de 14 aeronaves de su colecci\u00f3n. Las aeronaves en exhibici\u00f3n van cambiando a lo largo del tiempo a medida que les llega la hora de pasar por tareas de mantenimiento, aunque en al menos una ocasi\u00f3n varias aeronaves tuvieron que se retiradas de la muestra y puestos en reserva por los da\u00f1os sufridos durante un fen\u00f3meno meteorol\u00f3gico. Al Sudoeste de la aeroestaci\u00f3n, cruzando la pista 01\/19, se encuentra el \u00e1rea de restauraci\u00f3n y mantenimiento. Conocido internamente como <strong>\u00abBlast Wall\u00bb<\/strong> (\u00abmuro de arenado\u00bb), este es el sector donde los voluntarios del museo realizan tareas de mantenimiento, restauraci\u00f3n y repintado de las aeronaves de la instituci\u00f3n. De all\u00ed han salido, relucientes, aeronaves tales como el F-105B Thunderchief 54-0107\/FH-107 o la secci\u00f3n delantera del F-14A Tomcat 158627\/AD-101 que se exhiben est\u00e1ticamente en la l\u00ednea de vuelo. Este sector, al igual que un rinc\u00f3n y un hangar de otra plataforma de vuelo ubicada al Sur de la terminal cruzando la pista 06\/24, sirven tambi\u00e9n para alojar c\u00e9lulas a\u00e9reas (completas o incompletas) y otros artefactos que no se encuentran en condiciones aptas para su exhibici\u00f3n al p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Principales atracciones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cortes\u00eda de <strong>Bill Baker<\/strong>, uno de los voluntarios m\u00e1s activos del museo, a fines de enero de 2020 pudimos efectuar un completo inventario de las aeronaves en exhibici\u00f3n o reserva y encontramos varios \u00edtems dignos de destacar. El m\u00e1s llamativo de ellos es, sin discusi\u00f3n, el P-3C Orion 156515\/LL-515, al que se puede acceder en la l\u00ednea de vuelo mediante toures guiados por voluntarios del museo y en el cual se puede observar cada puesto de la tripulaci\u00f3n en condiciones muy cercanas a la realidad operativa de la m\u00e1quina. height: 253px;\" \/> <\/a> <\/div> <\/div> <!-- close group --> <\/div> <!-- close row --> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Al momento de nuestra visita a fines de enero, un hangar corporativo privado en el <strong>sector Sur del aer\u00f3dromo<\/strong> alojaba al AH-1W Super Cobra 161017\/HF-71, helic\u00f3ptero de ataque que lleg\u00f3 en vuelo al museo a inicios de enero y deber\u00eda haberse incorporado a la l\u00ednea de vuelo el 22 de febrero pasado. En el mismo sector, pero al aire libre, tambi\u00e9n pudimos confirmar la existencia del Vampire da\u00f1ado en el tornado de 2017 y descubrir otras dos c\u00e9lulas de reciente incorporaci\u00f3n: Un T-2C Buckeye y un YV-22A Osprey. Este \u00faltimo result\u00f3 ser la sorpresa m\u00e1s llamativa de nuestra visita ya que se tratar\u00eda nada m\u00e1s ni nada menos que del primer prototipo del famoso convertiplano construido por Bell y Boeing (Bureau Number 163911). A menos que nuestras verificaciones sean incorrectas, el prototipo habr\u00eda terminado su carrera en vuelo con la Infanter\u00eda de Marina, fue convertido en simulador consolidado de mantenimiento el\u00e9ctrico para la Fuerza A\u00e9rea (aceptado por esta en septiembre de 2004) y termin\u00f3 sus d\u00edas en Hickory.<\/p>\n<p>Trat\u00e1ndose de una instituci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro, el museo no puede darse el lujo de contar con personal contratado, pero cuenta con un <strong>programa de voluntarios<\/strong> que convoca a civiles (con o sin experiencia aeron\u00e1utica) y veteranos de guerra que quieran <em>\u00aborientar al p\u00fablico visitante, restaurar y reparar aviones, trabajar en las redes sociales y realizar recorridos para escolares e invitados\u00bb<\/em> y conseguir una gratificaci\u00f3n en <em>\u00absatisfacci\u00f3n, diversi\u00f3n y orgullo\u00bb<\/em>.
