Nada nuevo.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed pues, se embarc\u00f3 en una serie de pedidos Boeing 787 Dreamliners y 737 MAX, adem\u00e1s de A320neos para ejecutar el plan de negocios. Aun hubo m\u00e1s interrupciones en su flota Dreamliner cuando se llevaron a cabo las inspecciones del motor Rolls-Royce Trent 1000.<\/p>\n<p>A ello se sum\u00f3 en marzo de 2019 la paralizaci\u00f3n de la flota de 737 MAX, destinada parte de ella a operar servicios transatl\u00e1nticos.<\/p>\n<p>Tampoco result\u00f3 f\u00e1cil el camino regulatorio. La decisi\u00f3n de Norwegian de llevar a cabo operaciones de largo radio a trav\u00e9s de una subsidiaria irlandesa provoc\u00f3 objeciones de los sindicatos y los transportistas estadounidenses, acus\u00e1ndola de intentar eludir las normas laborales m\u00e1s estrictas de Noruega (ver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gacetaeronautica.com\/gaceta\/wp-101\/?p=20731\">Se viene Norwegian<\/a>). El resultado fue un largo y tortuoso proceso para asegurar la aprobaci\u00f3n de Estados Unidos para operar vuelos transatl\u00e1nticos a trav\u00e9s de la unidad irlandesa.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de estos desaf\u00edos, Norwegian finalmente logr\u00f3 construir una importante red de largo recorrido, predominantemente transatl\u00e1ntica. Algunos tomaron nota&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Varias nuevas aerol\u00edneas anunciaron planes para meterse a competir al mercado trasatl\u00e1ntico, mientras que las compa\u00f1\u00edas tradicionales reaccionaron con movimientos competitivos propios para apuntar al segmento de ocio premium.<\/p>\n<p>En particular, eso fue evidente con IAG. El holding hispano-brit\u00e1nico padeci\u00f3 el aterrizaje de Norwegian en Barcelona y Gatwick. Incluso mucho antes de la retirada de la habilitaci\u00f3n del 737 MAX y de la llegada de la pandemia y sus ominosas restricciones. Varias de las nuevas rutas de larga distancia que lanz\u00f3 Norwegian se suspendieron ya en 2018. En septiembre de 2019, cort\u00f3 sus vuelos transatl\u00e1nticos restantes desde Irlanda.<\/p>\n<p>A principios de 2020, Norwegian se encontraba en plena reestructuraci\u00f3n, un proceso que se volvi\u00f3 completamente cr\u00edtico cuando comenz\u00f3 la pandemia. Una restructuraci\u00f3n financiera para desbloquear el apoyo estatal le dio un respiro al operador lowcost.<\/p>\n<p>Pero lleg\u00f3 la segunda ola de la pandemia y esto volvi\u00f3 a impactar a la demanda de viajes y oblig\u00f3 a la aerol\u00ednea a iniciar procedimientos formales de reestructuraci\u00f3n y a cerrar definitivamente sus operaciones de largo recorrido.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfLas aerol\u00edneas n\u00f3rdicas, principales v\u00edctimas del modelo?<\/h2>\n<p>Norwegian no estaba sola en la competencia trasatl\u00e1ntica en los pa\u00edses n\u00f3rdicos. La aerol\u00ednea danesa <b>Primera Air<\/b>, que tambi\u00e9n se embarc\u00f3 en operaciones de largo recorrido y bajo costo, aunque colaps\u00f3 antes de que el plan pudiera implementarse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39622\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" modelo emergente en las rutas transatl\u00e1nticas era el transporte premium, con nuevos jugadores tales como <b>Eos<\/b>, <b>Maxjet<\/b> y <b>Silverjet<\/b>. Pero este negocio colaps\u00f3 con el estallido de la crisis, y ya no volvi\u00f3 a ser lo que promet\u00eda cuando la econom\u00eda inici\u00f3 su recuperaci\u00f3n y los pasajeros comenzaron a retornar.<\/p>\n<p>En cuanto al modelo lowcost de largo radio, desde siempre ha sido un desaf\u00edo hacerlo funcionar, ya que por un lado requiere precios econ\u00f3micos como principal impulsor de la demanda, mientras que, por el otro, necesita aviones que sean extremadamente eficientes en el consumo de combustible. Pero esos aviones muy \u201cahorradores\u201d son el \u00faltimo grito de la industria, por tanto, son m\u00e1s caros de comprar, o alquilar, que un avi\u00f3n de una generaci\u00f3n anterior.<\/p>\n<p>Es muy dif\u00edcil prever el futuro de un modelo de negocio en la incertidumbre de una pandemia global y con restricciones de viaje a tutipl\u00e9n. Incluso una vez que las fronteras re reabran irrestrictamente, el sector tardar\u00e1 en volver a la din\u00e1mica anterior.<\/p>\n<p>Est\u00e1 claro que las legacy deben salir a competir con toda su fuerza por los pasajeros, quienes estaremos muy sensibles a los precios. El lucrativo negocio de la clase ejecutiva de los aviones previsiblemente quedar\u00e1 resentido.<\/p>\n<p>Por tanto la aerol\u00edneas tradicionales necesitar\u00e1n hacer sus propios negocios a\u00fan m\u00e1s rentables y adaptables, combinado con su acceso al tr\u00e1fico de alimentaci\u00f3n de los hubs. Esto \u00faltimo es algo que ha sido un desaf\u00edo tanto para Norwegian como para otras de nueva creaci\u00f3n. En definitiva, este ser\u00e1 otro factor que socavar\u00e1 la posici\u00f3n de mercado que las lowcost de largo radio han tratado de explotar.<\/p>\n<h2><em>\u00abGame changer\u00bb<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Con el comienzo de las operaciones del A321XLR a principios de 2023, se renovar\u00e1n las oportunidades para aquellas aerol\u00edneas que quieran emprender el desaf\u00edo trasatl\u00e1ntico lowcost con un enfoque de menor riesgo. Es la caracter\u00edstica que permitir\u00e1 al jet volar desde Europa continental a los Estados Unidos \u00f3 Canad\u00e1 sin mayores problemas.<\/p>\n<p>El avi\u00f3n podr\u00eda ser perfecto para la recuperaci\u00f3n despu\u00e9s de la crisis del coronavirus, si Airbus se mantiene en los plazos proyectados, a pesar de las dificultades que plantea la pandemia. El fabricante europeo comenzar\u00eda a construir la l\u00ednea de montaje dedicada al avi\u00f3n el pr\u00f3ximo junio de 2021, para que la l\u00ednea de producci\u00f3n entre en funcionamiento para el verano boreal de 2022. El A321XLR podr\u00eda ser justo lo que Airbus necesita tener en su portfolio, ya que el largo recorrido se recuperar\u00e1 lentamente.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, la cuesti\u00f3n de los altos costos de propiedad o arrendamiento persistir\u00e1, aunque un mercado aeron\u00e1utico en recesi\u00f3n podr\u00eda ofrecer nuevas oportunidades para conseguir aviones a mejores precios.<\/p>\n<h2>Tampoco un fracaso rotundo<\/h2>\n<p>El modelo lowcost de largo radio era todo lo ruinoso que parec\u00eda y posiblemente las expectativas empresariales estuvieran sobredimensionadas, ya que ciertas rutas voladas por Norwegian con B787 eran rentables antes de la pandemia. La aerol\u00ednea anunci\u00f3 a principios de 2019 que planeaba volar en alg\u00fan momento de 2021 a Londres desde JFK y Boston con A321LR (y A321XLR cuando estuviera disponible). Si bien en mayo de 2020 JetBlue anunci\u00f3 p\u00fablicamente habr\u00eda demoras en el lanzamiento de este negocio por la crisis del coronavirus, sigue interesada en unirse a la competici\u00f3n.
