Retirado del servicio despu\u00e9s de la ca\u00edda del Muro de Berl\u00edn, el avi\u00f3n se vendi\u00f3 en los Estados Unidos en medio de lo que Jarrett Adams, un analista aeroespacial y de defensa de Forecast International, describi\u00f3 en aquel entonces como una <em>\u201cventa de garaje militar [producida por el Glasnost] de proporciones gigantescas\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>La aeronave llam\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n de los pilotos argentinos <strong>Alfonso Bernasconi<\/strong> y <strong>Gustavo Caglieri<\/strong>, quienes entre 1996 y 1997 invirtieron una suma estimada en US $ 30.000 para comprar el propio jet, $ 8.000 para un nuevo motor, $ 7.500 para repintarlo de blanco, otros $ 40.000 para dotarlo de nueva avi\u00f3nica y alrededor de $ 15.000 para que Royal Aviation lo devolviera a condiciones de vuelo en Mesa Falcon Field, Arizona.
