Nunca vi algo parecido en billetes locales, y me pareci\u00f3 interesante averiguar de qu\u00e9 se trataba. Imag\u00ednense un billete con la imagen de Jorge Newbery, que en su momento fue tan popular como Maradona.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho (1869-1959) fue un ge\u00f3grafo, cart\u00f3grafo, navegante e historiador portugu\u00e9s, que recorri\u00f3 el mundo realizando diversos trabajos cient\u00edficos para su pa\u00eds, fundamentalmente en colonias africanas y asi\u00e1ticas y fij\u00f3 sus fronteras con precisi\u00f3n. En uno de estos viajes conoci\u00f3 a Sacadura Cabral, un piloto que le explic\u00f3 que la navegaci\u00f3n a\u00e9rea astron\u00f3mica era, en ese momento, imposible, porque no se pod\u00eda ubicar el horizonte con precisi\u00f3n entre nubes, y lo anim\u00f3 a desarrollar el sextante de horizonte artificial, que luego llevar\u00eda su nombre. Con este antecedente, en el marco de las celebraciones del centenario de Brasil, realizaron otro vuelo transatl\u00e1ntico siguiendo la ruta Lisboa-Las Palmas-Sao Vicente (Cabo Verde)-Porto Praia-Fernando de Noronha-Recife-Salvador-Porto Seguro-Vitoria-R\u00edo de Janeiro, siendo recibido con gran algarab\u00eda, tanto en Brasil, como a su regreso a Portugal, donde fue ascendido a contraalmirante y condecorado.<\/p>\n<p>El viaje de 8.383 kil\u00f3metros demand\u00f3 79 d\u00edas (62 horas y 26 minutos de vuelo efectivo) y fue realizado en tres hidroaviones biplanos Fairey IIID Mk II. El primero, llamado \u00a0<em>Lusitania,<\/em> se destruy\u00f3 en las rocas de San Pedro y San Pablo, en Brasil. La m\u00e1quina fue reemplazada por otra similar, bautizado <em>Patria<\/em>, que se destruy\u00f3 en ese mismo lugar, provey\u00e9ndose un tercer aparato, denominado <em>Epit\u00e1cio Pessoa<\/em>, con el que llegaron a R\u00edo de Janeiro. Fue la primera traves\u00eda del Atl\u00e1ntico.<\/p>\n<p>Como detalle curioso, este vuelo qued\u00f3 en la historia como el vuelo de Gago Coutinho, que ofici\u00f3 de navegante, y no de Sacadura Cabral, que fue el piloto. Se us\u00f3 para la navegaci\u00f3n del Graf Zeppelin en su vuelo alrededor del mundo en 1929 y fue adoptado por muchas compa\u00f1\u00edas a\u00e9reas antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.<\/p>\n<p>Gago Coutinho, que perteneci\u00f3 al Gran Oriente Lusitano de la masoner\u00eda portuguesa, fue ascendido a almirante en 1958 y muri\u00f3 en 1959.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Los homenajes posteriores<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despu\u00e9s de su muerte, Gago Coutinho fue objeto de todo tipo de homenajes. El billete del que hablamos arriba fue emitido en 1978.<\/p>\n<p>El primer monumento a Coutinho y Cabral fue inaugurado el 17 de junio de 1972, en el barrio de Belem de Lisboa, en la desembocadura del r\u00edo Tajo, el lugar desde donde parti\u00f3 el vuelo, con la presencia del presidente de la Rep\u00fablica, almirante Am\u00e9rico Thomaz. Seg\u00fan la prensa de la \u00e9poca, era una obra de l\u00edneas modernas y concepci\u00f3n audaz, realizada en hormig\u00f3n y acero inoxidable por el escultor Laranjeira Santos y el arquitecto 1972).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pero un conjunto tan moderno fue motivo de discusiones airadas desde el primer d\u00eda, lo que termin\u00f3 haciendo que la obra se trasladara a una ubicaci\u00f3n menos visible en 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Pero el 15 de noviembre de 1991 el ministro de Defensa Fernando Nogueira inaugur\u00f3 otro monumento a Coutinho y Cabral, consistente en una maqueta, casi a escala natural del avi\u00f3n Farley, realizada en bronce, con los bustos de los aeronautas en la cabina, montado en un pedestal de hormig\u00f3n, en el mismo lugar, o muy cerca, de donde estuvo el Los dos primeros se rompieron entre las Rocas de San Pedro y San Pablo, pero el gobierno lusitano los reemplaz\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente, por lo que el vuelo no se interrumpi\u00f3.
