El barril de petr\u00f3leo costaba menos de cinco d\u00f3lares y, la verdad sea dicha, poca gente lo sab\u00eda, ni siquiera se sab\u00eda qu\u00e9 era un barril de petr\u00f3leo. De alguna manera parec\u00eda una \u00e9poca feliz, por lo menos para la mayor\u00eda de los norteamericanos, que pensaban en una prosperidad sin l\u00edmites y barata.  <\/p>\n<p>En 1966 Boeing y Pan American hab\u00edan lanzado el Boeing 747 (que todav\u00eda no era el Jumbo), y la idea a largo plazo era que estos aviones permitir\u00edan cruzar el Atl\u00e1ntico por 100 d\u00f3lares. El progreso, en todo sentido parec\u00eda no tener l\u00edmites. El avi\u00f3n entr\u00f3 en servicio en enero de 1970 y, para muchos, se\u00f1al\u00f3 el rumbo de un mundo nuevo, aunque no carente de problemas, porque entre otras cosas en Viet Nam hab\u00eda comenzado la retirada, algo que impactar\u00eda fuertemente en el orgullo norteamericano.  <\/p>\n<p>Los primeros tiempos del Jumbo fueron parecidos a los de cualquier avi\u00f3n avanzado, era admirable en muchos aspectos, pero alg\u00fan problema tuvo. Probablemente el mayor fue el comercial, porque hab\u00eda que vender muchos pasajes para que fuera rentable, pero las compa\u00f1\u00edas lo fueron adoptando.  <\/p>\n<p>El Ford Thunderbird, a su vez, es uno de los modelos hist\u00f3ricos emblem\u00e1ticos de la marca. Lanzado en 1955, siempre fue un auto lujoso con car\u00e1cter deportivo, por supuesto a la norteamericana, grande, pesado, y con motores de mucha potencia y alto consumo. De alguna manera tambi\u00e9n era un s\u00edmbolo de un futuro venturoso. Como ocurri\u00f3 con muchos autos a lo largo de la historia (ver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gacetaeronautica.com\/gaceta\/wp-101\/?p=1386\" target=\"_blank\">El autom\u00f3vil revolucionario<\/a>) la promoci\u00f3n del Thunderbird estuvo asociada con ideas de aviones y sat\u00e9lites artificiales desde el principio. A fin y al cabo era un p\u00e1jaro, y se lo llamaba T-Bird, o m\u00e1s familiarmente Bird.  <\/p>\n<p>Nuestro aviso de hoy fue publicado en <em>National Geographic<\/em> de octubre de 1969, antes de la entrada en servicio del Jumbo y muestra lo que vendr\u00eda, el nuevo avi\u00f3n y el pr\u00f3ximo modelo del auto con motor de 7 litros de cilindarada (429 pulgadas c\u00fabicas), \u201cdos hermosas maneras de volar\u201d.  <\/p>\n<p>Pero el tiempo terminar\u00eda por desmentir estos buenos augurios. En octubre de 1973 ocurri\u00f3 la guerra del Yom Kippur, y como consecuencia de ella los pa\u00edses exportadores de petr\u00f3leo decidieron un embargo del fluido, y cuando abrieron el grifo el precio se hab\u00eda multiplicado por cuatro.  <\/p>\n<p>Adi\u00f3s ilusiones. Las industrias tuvieron que empezar a pensar desesperadamente en productos que consumieran menos, y los autos de lujo norteamericanos fueron las primeras bajas de una lista que se hizo interminable.  <\/p>\n<p>El emblem\u00e1tico Jumbo sobrevivi\u00f3, pero durante unos a\u00f1os sus pedidos fueron escas\u00edsimos, volaban con pocos pasajeros y eran maldecidos por los administradores de las l\u00edneas a\u00e9reas. Los primeros indicios del proceso que termin\u00f3 con la quiebras de Pan American en 1991 hay que buscarlos aqu\u00ed.  <\/p>\n<p>Y debieron pasar m\u00e1s de treinta a\u00f1os para que apareciera un avi\u00f3n de pasajeros m\u00e1s grande que el Jumbo, un proceso que hasta entonces nunca hab\u00eda insumido una d\u00e9cada.  <\/p>\n<p>Estamos en otro mundo.  <\/p>\n<hr>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eran otros tiempos, era otra la historia.
