Martin de Baltimore (Maryland), que hab\u00eda sido entregado en marzo de 1932 con la designaci\u00f3n experimental \u201cXB-907\u201d para ser probado en las instalaciones de Wright Field.<\/p>\n<p>Tras sucesivas modificaciones \u2013aumento de la envergadura, nuevos motores, instalaci\u00f3n de cubiertas para el piloto y la secci\u00f3n trasera, etc. \u2013 el Cuerpo A\u00e9reo del Ej\u00e9rcito de los EE.UU. <em>(United States Army Air Corps)<\/em> orden\u00f3 su adquisici\u00f3n en serie.<\/p>\n<p>Inicialmente fue presentado en el anuario de Aviaci\u00f3n de 1934 como \u201c<em>Mystery bomber<\/em>\u201d (\u201cBombardero Misterioso\u201d), ya que en su momento represent\u00f3 un avance tecnol\u00f3gico significativo: Construido totalmente en metal, ten\u00eda innovaciones como el tren de aterrizaje retr\u00e1ctil, capacidad de almacenaje interior de bombas, torreta de artiller\u00eda giratoria y cabina cerrada con un sistema de instrumental que inclu\u00eda horizonte artificial, giro direccional girosc\u00f3pico y piloto autom\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43984\" style=\"width: USAF).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Era un 50% m\u00e1s veloz que los dem\u00e1s bombarderos de su \u00e9poca (350 km\/h de velocidad m\u00e1xima) y tan r\u00e1pido como los cazas existentes.<\/p>\n<p>Todos esos avances llevaron a que se lo considerara \u201c<em>la maravilla del poder a\u00e9reo de su \u00e9poca\u201d<\/em>, seg\u00fan declaraciones del general Henry \u201cHap\u201d Arnold.<\/p>\n<p>Uno de los puntos negativos de este avi\u00f3n era que la estrechez de la cabina llev\u00f3 a que algunos instrumentos como los man\u00f3metros de combustible y lubricante y el term\u00f3metro de aceite estuvieran ubicados fuera de la misma, en peque\u00f1os paneles alojados en la uni\u00f3n del capot del motor con el borde de ataque de los piloto \u2013a la altura de los motores\u2013, un bombardero-artillero en la trompa y un observador\/radio operador en la parte posterior del fuselaje.<\/p>\n<p>Eventualmente, pod\u00eda agregarse un cuarto tripulante, pr\u00f3ximo al compartimento de bombas y sin visual exterior.<\/p>\n<p>Su armamento se compon\u00eda de una ametralladora Browning de 7,60 mm en las torretas de proa y posterior que represent\u00f3 la incorporaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s importante del USAAC desde el final de la Primera Guerra Mundial.<\/p>\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n se adquirieron 32 B-10 con nuevos motores Pratt and Whitney en lugar de los Wright Cyclone originales, denominados B-12 y equipados de tanques de combustible adicionales para misiones de largo alcance.<\/p>\n<p>Los Martin fortalecieron la Aviaci\u00f3n de bombardeo del USAAC, pero el surgimiento de la Segunda Guerra, en la cual los EE.UU. ingresaron tras el ataque sorpresivo de la Aviaci\u00f3n japonesa a la base naval de Pearl Harbor, gener\u00f3 un
