Nos encontramos en el coraz\u00f3n del Ala 15 del Ej\u00e9rcito del Aire, cuna de los Hornet espa\u00f1oles. Los pilotos del segundo periodo se acaban de colocar su equipo de vuelo y se dirigen a la L\u00ednea en la que los Hornets ma\u00f1os est\u00e1n esperando para una nueva misi\u00f3n. Mientras tanto el personal especialista comienza a configurar varios cascos con el reci\u00e9n incorporado sistema Scorpion.<\/p>\n<p>El Scorpion de la compa\u00f1\u00eda francesa Thales es un dispositivo de tipo HMCS (Helmet Mounted Cueing System) que actualmente est\u00e1 en proceso de implantaci\u00f3n en las dos alas del Ej\u00e9rcito del Aire equipadas con el EF-18M, Ala 12 de Torrej\u00f3n y Ala 15 de Zaragoza. Actualmente el Ala 15 dispone de dos instructores calificados que son los que llevan a cabo las tareas de instrucci\u00f3n con el resto de pilotos de la unidad. La flota de aviones del Ala est\u00e1 en proceso de transici\u00f3n al nuevo sistema, realiz\u00e1ndose los trabajos de modificaci\u00f3n en las propias instalaciones de la unidad en Zaragoza, as\u00ed como en la Maestranza A\u00e9rea de Albacete.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien todas las celulas monoplazas y biplazas ser\u00e1n equipadas con el sistema, no todos los pilotos estar\u00e1n calificados en el mismo, ser\u00e1 requisito obligatorio tener un m\u00ednimo entre 400 y 500 horas de vuelo para que el piloto pueda realizar la conversi\u00f3n al casco con el sistema integrado. Lo primero que llama la atenci\u00f3n es el cubrevisor del casco, mucho m\u00e1s grande que lo habituales del casco HGU-55. Cuando se retira el cubrevisor sale a la luz el enorme visor diurno, este tama\u00f1o es debido a que se debe dejar espacio interior para el \u00abdisplay module\u00bb, el elemento a trav\u00e9s del cual se presenta la informaci\u00f3n frente al ojo del piloto. Otro de los conceptos que llama la atenci\u00f3n es precisamente uno de los puntos fuertes del sistema, es un kit totalmente intercambiable y puede montarse en cualquiera de los cascos HGU-55 que ya est\u00e1n en servicio en la unidad (con unas m\u00ednimas modificaciones previas).<\/p>\n<p>Esta filosof\u00eda es exactamente la misma que las NVG (Night Vision Googles) y presenta indudables ventajas frente a los sistemas que requieren la construcci\u00f3n de un casco a medida (proceso de elevado coste y con un plazo de varios meses). La ergonom\u00eda respecto del casco HGU est\u00e1ndard es algo diferente, notando el piloto la diferente distribuci\u00f3n de pesos durante el periodo de transici\u00f3n. En la parte trasera del casco se ubica la sensorizaci\u00f3n que, trabajando en conjunto con los \u00abfiducials\u00bb (puntos de referencia montados en la cupula de la cabina), permiten trazar la posici\u00f3n de la cabeza del piloto respecto de la aeronave.<\/p>\n<p>El sistema Scorpion no es una ampliaci\u00f3n de las capacidades del avi\u00f3n, es un sistema de visi\u00f3n 360\u00b0 que permite al piloto tener acceso a informaci\u00f3n sin tener que dirigir la vista a las pantallas o al HUD del avi\u00f3n. Es por tanto un elemento que mejora la interface hombre-m\u00e1quina y que permite al piloto incrementar su Situational Awareness al tener informaci\u00f3n disponible en su campo de visi\u00f3n sea cual sea el punto al que el piloto dirige la vista.<\/p>\n<p>Otra novedad es que la integraci\u00f3n del Scorpion en el sistema de armas C-15 (denominaci\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola del EF-18) permite al piloto poder realizar disparos off boresight aire-aire con el misil Iris-T, pudiendo el piloto dirigir el cabezal buscador del misil al punto que desee dirigiendo \u00fanicamente su vista (y por extensi\u00f3n el visor Scorpion) al objetivo. Otros sistemas como el pod Litening tambi\u00e9n se integran totalmente en el visor. Asimismo la gestion de datos en el campo de batalla que se realiza por medio de data link tambi\u00e9n vuelca informaci\u00f3n en el ojo del piloto a trav\u00e9s del visor Scorpion. El simulador que actualmente est\u00e1 en servicio en el Ala 15 poco tiene que ver con la versi\u00f3n inicial que construy\u00f3 la empresa espa\u00f1ola Ceselsa all\u00e1 por los a\u00f1os 80, actualmente el simulador ubicado en la base de Zaragoza tiene unas caracter\u00edsticas, capacidades e interface visual que permiten dar a los pilotos una formaci\u00f3n en simulador de m\u00e1xima calidad.<\/p>\n<p>En cuanto al Scorpion, la conexi\u00f3n del casco a la Interface Control Unit del avi\u00f3n se realiza a trav\u00e9s de un nuevo conector instalado en cabina. Para que el cableado no quede suelto los monos de vuelo de los pilotos incluyen una peque\u00f1a modificaci\u00f3n con una presilla que fija el cable al cuerpo del piloto.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando el piloto conecta la presentaci\u00f3n de datos en el visor por primera vez, la reacci\u00f3n inicial es adaptar su vista y su cerebro al nuevo input de informaci\u00f3n. La transici\u00f3n es fluida y r\u00e1pidamente el piloto asimila el sistema.
