Eran los orgullosos due\u00f1os de muchos equipos de gran tama\u00f1o que no pod\u00edan ser transportados por ning\u00fan vag\u00f3n, cami\u00f3n o avi\u00f3n en ese momento, lo que significaba que su \u00fanica opci\u00f3n era navegar en los oc\u00e9anos que rodean Am\u00e9rica Central. Esto tom\u00f3 entre 18 y 25 d\u00edas, una soluci\u00f3n extremadamente ineficiente. Ah\u00ed es donde entr\u00f3 Aero Spacelines, con sede en California, para salvar el d\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Fundado en 1960, el fabricante de aeronaves inicialmente busc\u00f3 crear un carguero inigualable construido a partir de un Boeing Stratotanker muy modificado. As\u00ed naci\u00f3 el \u201cPregnant Guppy\u201d. Solo se fabric\u00f3 uno, y debido a su di\u00e1metro de 6 metros, la NASA pod\u00eda mover carga como la segunda etapa de un cohete Saturno en menos de un d\u00eda. El \u00e9xito de Aero Spacelines les hizo considerar la pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n de su familia Guppy, el \u00abSuper Guppy\u00bb, mucho m\u00e1s grande. Una de las diferencias entre ambos modelos son los motores, en el primero son cuatro motores Pratt &amp; Whitney T-34-P-7WA y en el segundo son cuatro turbopropulsores Allison 501-D22C.<\/p>\n<p>Entre las caracter\u00edsticas clave de &#8216;Super Guppy&#8217; tenemos una capacidad para cuatro tripulantes, tiene un longitud de 43,84 m, una envergadura de 47,62 m y una altura de 14,78 m. Su peso sin carga es de 46.039 kg y es capaz de transportar hasta 24.720 kg. Su velocidad m\u00e1xima es de 463 km\/h y tiene un alcance de 3.219 km.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>La llegada a Europa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A finales de los sesenta la necesidad de los Guppy en los Estados Unidos ya no era tal. El \u00e9xito de estos aviones era rotundo, por ello el consorcio europeo adquiri\u00f3 el derecho de fabricarlos, llegando a construir otros dos Guppys en Francia a principios de los 80.<\/p>\n<p>Durante muchos a\u00f1os estos aviones estuvieron transportando componentes entre las diferentes factor\u00edas distribuidas por Europa. Pero ya a principios de los a\u00f1os 90s Airbus decidi\u00f3 desarrollar su propia versi\u00f3n del Guppy bas\u00e1ndose en el A300, un avi\u00f3n mucho m\u00e1s moderno y con mayor capacidad de carga. Esta soluci\u00f3n de ingenier\u00eda permiti\u00f3 evitar el complej\u00edsimo sistema de proas o popas abisagradas, que implican una desconexi\u00f3n mec\u00e1nica, hidr\u00e1ulica y el\u00e9ctrica entre la secci\u00f3n que se abre y el resto del aparato (foto: Jos\u00e9 Luis Lezg).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A su vez, el Beluga fue reemplazado por el Airbus Beluga XL (Airbus A330-700L), que es el actual avi\u00f3n de carga\u00a0 voluminosa del fabricante europeo.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>El benjam\u00edn de la familia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pan American World Airways fue uno de los principales usuarios del Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, la versi\u00f3n original para pasajeros del mencionado Stratotanker. Aero Spacelines consigui\u00f3 un viejo Pan Am 377, usando sus partes para hacer lo que se llamar\u00eda el \u00abMini Guppy\u00bb. Seg\u00fan Aero Affaires, el Guppy m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o presentaba una cabina y una cola pr\u00e1cticamente sin cambios, aunque el cuerpo principal se rehizo, con un fuselaje alargado y hinchado, adem\u00e1s de una envergadura m\u00e1s larga.<\/p>\n<p>El primer Mini Guppy, ten\u00eda un di\u00e1metro m\u00e1ximo de 5,48 m, aunque su \u00e1rea de carga principal era un poco m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a. Los cuatro motores de pist\u00f3n Pratt &amp; Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major permitieron que el Mini Guppy transportara hasta 14.515 kg, \u00a0y ten\u00eda una cola practicable para facilitar la carga. Registrado por primera vez como N1037V, hoy N422AU, el Mini Guppy se realiz\u00f3 en su vuelo inaugural el 24 de mayo de 1967, volando desde el Aeropuerto Municipal de Santa B\u00e1rbara. Dos d\u00edas despu\u00e9s, vol\u00f3 a trav\u00e9s del Atl\u00e1ntico, llevando un vag\u00f3n de tren Budd Company Skylounge al Sal\u00f3n Aeron\u00e1utico de Par\u00eds.<\/p>\n<p>La NASA tambi\u00e9n emplear\u00eda el Mini Guppy para ayudar a entregar carga aeroespacial, como la nave espacial Pioneer 10. Sin embargo, el carguero se vendi\u00f3 varias veces antes de terminar con Erickson Air-Crane (ahora Erickson Incorporated), donde pas\u00f3 a\u00f1os transportando helic\u00f3pteros Air Crane. Ahora est\u00e1 retirado y se exhibe en el Museo del Aire de Tillamook en Oreg\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>El Mini Guppy Turbine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hubo otro Mini Guppy, desafortunadamente de corta duraci\u00f3n, que habr\u00eda sido mucho m\u00e1s capaz que el primero. Conocido como Mini Guppy Turbine (MGT), el segundo avi\u00f3n de la serie, a pesar de su nombre, presentaba motores turboh\u00e9lice Allison 501 similares a los que se ven en el C-130 Hercules de Lockheed. A diferencia de su contraparte m\u00e1s antigua, el MGT ten\u00eda una nariz giratoria para cargar carga desde el frente. Era insignificantemente m\u00e1s grande que el original, pero estaba clasificado para transportar casi el doble de la carga \u00fatil en peso.<\/p>\n<p>El Mini Guppy Turbine se elev\u00f3 a los cielos en marzo de 1970, pero se perdi\u00f3 tr\u00e1gicamente durante un accidente fatal de despegue dos meses despu\u00e9s en la Base de la Fuerza A\u00e9rea Edwards en California. Los cuatro tripulantes a bordo fallecieron en el incidente. Este accidente fue causado por la p\u00e9rdida de control direccional durante la prueba de motor fuera de servicio como parte de un vuelo de prueba planificado.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A\u00fan en el aire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>El quinto Super Guppy construido es propiedad de la NASA, y sigue volando en tareas de transporte. Uno en EEUU y los otros tres en Europa (Alemania, Inglaterra y Francia). Este \u00faltimo, con matr\u00edcula F-BPPA, ha pasado a formar parte en 2015 del museo de aeron\u00e1utica de Toulouse.<\/p>\n<p>Originalmente en custodia de la asociaci\u00f3n <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gacetaeronautica.com\/gaceta\/articulos\/1999\/06toulou\/index.htm\">Ailes Anciennes Toulouse<\/a>, un grupo de entusiastas que se ocupa de restaurar aviones antiguos.
