Como todo lo tur\u00edstico en Egipto, el precio de acceso a los museos es \u00abinternacional\u00bb (foto: Fernando Puppio).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>El Museo Militar Al Alamein fue fundado el 16 de diciembre de 1956, cuando el fallecido presidente Gamal Abd Al Nasser orden\u00f3 su creaci\u00f3n para conmemorar el papel de Egipto en una de las batallas m\u00e1s trascendentes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial: la batalla de Al Alamein, entre los aliados y las potencias del Eje en octubre de 1942.<\/p>\n<p>La localidad egipcia de Al Alamein est\u00e1 ubicada unos 110 km al oeste de Alejandr\u00eda. Hoy en d\u00eda predomina la actividad tur\u00edstica sobre la costa mediterr\u00e1nea y el paisaje nada tiene que ver con el lejano oto\u00f1o de 1942. El avi\u00f3n en cuesti\u00f3n, un Kittyhawk Mk.IA, matr\u00edcula de la RAF ET574, salt\u00f3 a la palestra a principios de 2012, cuando un equipo de prospecci\u00f3n petrol\u00edfera se top\u00f3 con los restos bien conservados del accidente en el desierto egipcio de Al-Wadi al-Jadid, cerca del oasis de Al Farafra. Ambos se exponen de una manera poco elegante debajo del mismo (foto: Fernando Puppio):<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>El avi\u00f3n perteneci\u00f3 al 260 Squadron de la RAF, y desaparec\u00f3 durante un vuelo en ferry el 28 de junio de 1942 con el sargento de vuelo Dennis Copping a los mandos. Copping era parte de una formaci\u00f3n de dos aeronaves que volaba aviones defectuosos desde el campo de aterrizaje en Biur Al Baheira hasta la 53\u00ba RSU, una Unidad de Recuperaci\u00f3n y Servicio en Wadi Natruna, mientras que el resto de su escuadr\u00f3n se retiraba apresuradamente del avance del Afrika Korps alem\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>Los restos del avi\u00f3n fueron recuperados del lugar del accidente con relativa velocidad, ya que una vez revelada la posici\u00f3n, comenzaban a ser \u201ccirujeados\u201d por la poblaci\u00f3n local. La restauraci\u00f3n da el pego pues el aspecto general de la m\u00e1quina es m\u00e1s que aceptable, aunque si vamos al detalle, es pobre. Por ello ha sido muy criticada desde el Reino Unido. Las criticas vienen originadas en la negativa egipcia de entregar los restos de la nave a Gran Breta\u00f1a, con la argumentaci\u00f3n que los centros de restauraci\u00f3n en Reino Unido (desde ya de alt\u00edsima calidad) lo habr\u00edan hecho mejor.<\/p>\n<p>Lo cierto, es que el Kittyhawk destaca en la exhibici\u00f3n al aire libre del museo, ya que la mayor\u00eda son veh\u00edculos terrestres, complementados con algunas piezas de artiller\u00eda y los restos del malogrado Spitfire.
