Se retirar\u00edan cediendo su lugar a los jets, con los que, objetivamente, no pod\u00edan competir.<\/p>\n<p>Durante la postguerra de 1945 dos fabricantes compitieron entre s\u00ed con dise\u00f1os que se fueron perfeccionando con el correr de los a\u00f1os: Lockheed con sus Constellation y Douglas, con sus modelos DC-6 y DC-7. Un vuelo en DC-6B entre Buenos Aires y Estocolmo, por SAS, sal\u00eda el viernes por la tarde y llegaba a destino al mediod\u00eda del domingo, despu\u00e9s de haber hecho escalas de una hora o menos en Montevideo, San Pablo, R\u00edo, Recife, Dakar, Lisboa, Zurich, Frankfurt y Copenhague. En esos tiempos la IATA suger\u00eda una tarifa, y las compa\u00f1\u00edas obedec\u00edan. Lo que si exist\u00edan eran las temporadas alta y baja, con precios distintos.<\/p>\n<p>Con un viaje de estas caracter\u00edsticas, era l\u00f3gico que las empresas destacaran en su publicidad la comodidad de sus asientos, sobre todo para dormir. El ancho m\u00e1ximo de la cabina del DC-7 era de 3,01 metros, lo que permit\u00eda una disposici\u00f3n de cuatro asientos de fondo c\u00f3moda, adecuada a una primera clase, pero se complicaba si se Para lograr potencias superiores a los 4.000 HP se parti\u00f3 de un motor de cuatro estrellas, 71,5 litros de cilindrada al que se agreg\u00f3 un sistema llamado turbo compound que, con los gases de escape mov\u00eda una turbina solidaria con el eje del motor, sumando potencia. El resultado se alcanz\u00f3, pero estas m\u00e1quinas ten\u00edan poca confiabilidad y fallaban con frecuencia, al tiempo que ese orden de potencia ya estaba al alcance de los turboh\u00e9lices de esa \u00e9poca, mucho m\u00e1s sencillos y confiables.<\/p>\n<p>Era un tema del que se hablaba poco, aunque circulaban chistes que dec\u00edan que estas m\u00e1quinas eran los trimotores m\u00e1s grandes del mundo, porque siempre llegaban con un motor fuera de servicio. Las compa\u00f1\u00edas estaban hartas de esta situaci\u00f3n y se apresuraron a encargar los reactores para reemplazarlos.<\/p>\n<p>La operaci\u00f3n de los aviones en tierra ten\u00eda algunas particularidades que hoy no se ven. No exist\u00edan las APU, por lo que era indispensable contar con un grupo electr\u00f3geno externo para el arranque de los motores y el funcionamiento de los sistemas cuando \u00e9stos estaban apagados. Tambi\u00e9n se ve\u00edan muchos extintores alrededor de las m\u00e1quinas.
