La raz\u00f3n es muy sencilla, ninguna aerol\u00ednea grande podr\u00eda mostrar que tiene cuatro proveedores distintos de aviones. Y menos mostrar que esos proveedores sean norteamericanos.  <\/p>\n<p>A lo sumo podr\u00e1 decir que tiene dos, Boeing y Airbus. S\u00f3lo en el mercado por debajo de los cien asientos hay verdadera competencia entre varios fabricantes. Esa es la realidad que, posiblemente, sea buena para los accionistas de Boeing y Airbus, pero quiz\u00e1s no lo sea para el resto de la humanidad, empezando por los pasajeros y las l\u00edneas a\u00e9reas.  <\/p>\n<p>Cuando termin\u00f3 la Segunda Guerra Mundial la industria aeron\u00e1utica norteamericana era muy grande e importante, y no ten\u00eda parang\u00f3n en el mundo. Como ocurre con las industrias b\u00e9licas cuando llega la paz, en 1945, entr\u00f3 en una crisis de cierta envergadura, pero la super\u00f3 mirando hacia el futuro, ofreciendo a sus clientes nuevos modelos que incorporaban toda la tecnolog\u00eda desarrollada durante el conflicto.  <\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed aparecieron nuevos transportes m\u00e1s grandes, m\u00e1s veloces, que pod\u00edan llegar m\u00e1s lejos y volar m\u00e1s alto. La presurizaci\u00f3n se hizo mandataria, y aparecieron muchos refinamientos en materia de motores e instrumental.  <\/p>\n<p>Cinco fabricantes salieron a disputarse el mercado, que estuvo dividido en dos sectores, los aviones de gran alcance, y los de corto radio, m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os. En el primer grupo estuvieron Boeing, Douglas y Lockheed, y en el segundo Convair y Martin. Los transportistas de aquel entonces ten\u00edan, en Estados Unidos, proveedores para elegir, y este aviso es la prueba.  <\/p>\n<p>Martin fue la primera en abandonar. Su modelo 2-0-2, a poco de entrar en servicio, sufri\u00f3 un accidente y debi\u00f3 ser retirado de servicio para recibir modificaciones estructurales (2-0-2A) y ser reemplazado poco despu\u00e9s por el modelo 4-0-4, presurizado, que no tuvo gran aceptaci\u00f3n.  <\/p>\n<p>Pero los otros cuatro fabricantes ser\u00edan, durante muchos a\u00f1os, los puntales de la industria, y propondr\u00edan permanentemente nuevos modelos o mejoras a los ya existentes.  <\/p>\n<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 pas\u00f3 despu\u00e9s? Los desarrollos de aeronaves se hicieron m\u00e1s caros despu\u00e9s de la crisis petrolera de 1973, y los fabricantes norteamericanos se hicieron conservadores. Innovaron con menos entusiasmo y lentamente dejaron de competir, incluso con sus propios modelos. El DC-9 se fabric\u00f3 durante 34 a\u00f1os, el 737 ya lleva 45, y el Jumbo 44. Es cierto que hubo muchas mejoras en el medio, pero son los mismos aviones, se venden bien, y nadie piensa en tomar riesgos para hacer otra cosa. Sin competencia la innovaci\u00f3n se adormece.  <\/p>\n<p>Desde el punto de vista financiero, puede explicarse por qu\u00e9 las empresas dejaron de fabricar aviones comerciales. Desde el punto de vista de una econom\u00eda enfocada al mercado es m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil, pero lo cierto es que as\u00ed Boeing se convirti\u00f3 en el gran monopolio norteamericano, con un avi\u00f3n para cada necesidad, es cierto, pero todo bajo un \u00fanico paraguas.  <\/p>\n<p>En Europa las cosas fueron parecidas.
