Por un lado un moderno avi\u00f3n ingles\u00a0 sobrevolando uno de los m\u00e1s emblem\u00e1ticos castillos palaciegos franceses, Chambord, ubicado en el valle del r\u00edo Loira. Por otro lado se distinguen claramente los emblemas de Air France y Rolls-Royce. Queda en tercer plano el nombre del fabricante del avion (imagen: archivo\u00a0 Pablo Luciano Potenze).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p align=\"justify\">Franceses e ingleses viven una rivalidad milenaria, que conoci\u00f3 todos los matices y todas las variantes de estas cuestiones. Entre 1337 y 1453 ocurri\u00f3 la guerra de los cien a\u00f1os, y antes y despu\u00e9s de este punto crucial hubo muchos enfrentamientos militares y de otros tipos, salpicados por \u00e9pocas de paz con bodas reales de conveniencia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nEl siglo XX los encontr\u00f3 del mismo lado en las dos guerras mundiales, y podr\u00eda decirse que lo que alguna vez fue una cuesti\u00f3n militar de fondo se fue haciendo m\u00e1s liviana, quedando, eso s\u00ed, todo tipo de disputas comerciales y deportivas. Lo normal.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAmbos pa\u00edses tuvieron proyectos aeron\u00e1uticos propios, que incluyeron la construcci\u00f3n de aviones, la creaci\u00f3n de fuerzas a\u00e9reas y la operaci\u00f3n de aerol\u00edneas. Compitieron con todo en la ruta del Canal de la Mancha, que alguna vez fue la m\u00e1s transitada del mundo, y quedan para la historia nombres como Air Union, Farman, AT&amp;T, British Airways (la de los a\u00f1os treinta), BEA y muchas otras.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nLo curioso es que las industrias de ambos pa\u00edses estuvieron lejos de ser brillantes, y sus aviones por lo general fueron muy limitados. Muy pocos productos franceses e ingleses fueron exitosos en el mundo, y sus ventas\u00a0 fueron m\u00e1s que nada el fruto de operaciones comerciales en pa\u00edses de segunda l\u00ednea, y sobre todo en el caso de los brit\u00e1nicos, transacciones dentro de su imperio colonial. Quiz\u00e1s la conciencia de estas limitaciones los haya llevado a un proceso de integraci\u00f3n de sus industrias, que dio frutos como el Concorde y finalmente los Airbus.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nEl Vickers Viscount fue, probablemente, el avi\u00f3n de pasajeros ingl\u00e9s m\u00e1s exitoso de la historia. Se fabricaron casi 450 unidades, lo que le da el t\u00edtulo de haber sido el que m\u00e1s aceptaci\u00f3n tuvo, porque si bien lo compraron todos los miembros del ex Imperio brit\u00e1nico, tambi\u00e9n tuvo buenas ventas en Estados Unidos, Europa y el resto del mundo. Adem\u00e1s, para su \u00e9poca, fue un avi\u00f3n revolucionario. Sin duda un grande de la ingenier\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAl mismo tiempo los franceses no daban pie con bola, y sus aviones comerciales de esa \u00e9poca \u2014pistoneros, sin presurizar y muchos dise\u00f1ados antes de la Guerra\u2014 no tuvieron mayor aceptaci\u00f3n fuera de Francia (Br\u00e9guet Deux Ponts, Nord 2501 Noratlas, NC-211 Cormoran, SE-161 Languedoc, SE-2010 Armagnac). Air France oper\u00f3 algunos en \u00c1frica, e incluso en rutas largas a Am\u00e9rica Latina, pero en las competitivas rutas europeas y del Atl\u00e1ntico Norte esas m\u00e1quinas no ten\u00edan posibilidades, por lo que a principios de los a\u00f1os cincuenta los franceses debieron resignarse a la realidad, y comprar aviones norteamericanos para las rutas de largo alcance, e ingleses para su red europea.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nPodr\u00edan haber elegido una flota ciento por ciento norteamericana, incorporando el Convair Liner como hicieron Lufthansa, Sabena, SAS y Swissair, o mixta como KLM, pero Air France opt\u00f3 por cubrir Europa casi exclusivamente con el Viscount.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nY obviamente los ingleses no iban a perderse la oportunidad de mostrar que sus aviones volaban con la bandera francesa, y lo hicieron \u2014entre otros\u2014 con esta pintura donde se ve su modernidad sobrevolando la tradici\u00f3n de los castillos franceses.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nEl aviso en rigor es de Rolls Royce, fabricante de los motores del avi\u00f3n.
