El avi\u00f3n parti\u00f3 completo, con las 180 plazas disponibles ocupadas. Un par de meses antes, el 16 de Mayo de 2004, la aerol\u00ednea se lanzaba al mercado con una campa\u00f1a promocional de 50.000 billetes a 10 euros para un periodo de 72 horas. Se vendieron casi todos.<\/p>\n<p>Tomando el hecho con la perspectiva de dan estos diez a\u00f1os de operaciones, ese vuelo fue el comienzo de un ciclo transformador no solo de la aviaci\u00f3n comercial espa\u00f1ola, sino de consolidaci\u00f3n de Barcelona como destino tur\u00edstico y de negocios.<\/p>\n<p>La historia de Vueling comienza un poco m\u00e1s atr\u00e1s, cuando la brit\u00e1nica Sue Smith y el piloto valenciano Eduardo Fair\u00e9n propusieron a Carlos Mu\u00f1oz crear un vuelo que uniera Manchester y Valencia all\u00e1 por 2002. Mu\u00f1oz junto a L\u00e1zaro Ros se pasaron un a\u00f1o trabajando la idea del Valencia-Manchester, hasta poner finalmente en funcionamiento la nueva empresa que ser\u00eda mucho m\u00e1s que eso.<\/p>\n<p>Ambos emprendedores prepararon el plan de negocios, desarrollaron la marca y la imagen corporativa, en tanto buscaron a una serie de socios estrat\u00e9gicos que afianzaran el proyecto a nivel industrial, empresarial y financiero. De esta manera, inicialmente, la compa\u00f1\u00eda fue propiedad de Apax Partners (40%), Inversiones Hemisferio (30%) y V.A. Investor, una sociedad de inversi\u00f3n de los directivos de JetBlue Airways (7%). Los fundadores de la empresa retuvieron un 23% y ocuparon los puestos de consejero delegado, Carlos Mu\u00f1oz, y director general L\u00e1zaro Ros.<\/p>\n<p>Vueling, como otras tantas <em>low cost<\/em>, naci\u00f3 gracias a la desregulaci\u00f3n de los cielos europeos y se afianz\u00f3 debido a la ampliaci\u00f3n de la demanda de vuelos a precios bajos, todo ello en los a\u00f1os de una econom\u00eda floreciente.<\/p>\n<p>Esa consolidaci\u00f3n no estuvo exenta de cambios y vicisitudes. Ni Mu\u00f1oz ni Ros siguen en la empresa. Salieron de ella expulsados por sus diferencias con los que fueran sus principales accionistas, cuando la compa\u00f1\u00eda atraves\u00f3 problemas econ\u00f3micos. Mu\u00f1oz y Ros acabaron formando otra compa\u00f1\u00eda: Volotea. Tampoco aquellos accionistas mayoritarios tienen ya participaciones en la compa\u00f1\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Durante su primera d\u00e9cada de vida, Vueling ha entrado y salido de la Bolsa, y se ha fusionado dos veces. Primero con Clickair (la primera <em>low cost<\/em> de Iberia) en el a\u00f1o 2009, y en 2013 con International Airlines Group (IAG), el grupo nacido de la fusi\u00f3n de British Airways e Iberia.<\/p>\n<p>La base principal de Vueling desde siempre, y tambi\u00e9n su hub, es Barcelona, en tanto cuenta con bases en otras ciudades espa\u00f1olas: Alicante, Oviedo (Asturias), Bilbao, La Palma (Gran Canaria), Ibiza, La Coru\u00f1a, Madrid, M\u00e1laga, Mallorca, Sevilla y Valencia. A nivel internacional dispone de cuatro bases: Schiphol (\u00c1msterdam), Florencia, Orly (Par\u00eds) y Roma.<\/p>\n<p>En estos 10 a\u00f1os la compa\u00f1\u00eda se ha situado entre las cinco primeras de bajo coste europeas. Factur\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 1.400 millones de euros en 2013, cuando transport\u00f3 a 17,2 millones de personas (en su primer a\u00f1o de vida transport\u00f3 400.000 pasajeros). Para este a\u00f1o plantea elevar su oferta m\u00e1s del 30% y volar una flota de 90 aviones desde 22 bases operativas. Ofrece tres grupo tarifarios denominados \u201cclases\u201d (lo que le da m\u00e1s glamour al tema): \u00abBasic\u00bb (s\u00f3lo vuelo y asiento), \u00abOptimum\u00bb (vuelo, asiento, y maleta facturada) y \u00abExcellence\u00bb (vuelo, asiento especial, maleta facturada, catering, embarque prioritario y prensa). Las tarifas Optimum y Excellence tambi\u00e9n permiten sumar puntos del programa de viajeros frecuentes de Iberia.<\/p>\n<p>Excellence es una virtual business class, y como tal, est\u00e1 pensada para el viajero de negocios. Adem\u00e1s del servicio especial a bordo, est\u00e1n bloqueados los asientos centrales de cada fila de la clase. En tierra el pasajero dispone de mostrador de facturaci\u00f3n especial y acceso a las salas VIP de los aeropuertos, esto \u00faltimo con cargo adicional.<\/p>\n<p>En cuanto a los servicios ofrece algunos que son tab\u00fa para algunas <em>low cost<\/em>, como es realizar vuelos en conexi\u00f3n. En Europa solo lo hacen la propia Vueling, Air Berlin y Norwegian Air Shuttle. Asimismo, opera en aeropuertos principales y adem\u00e1s es la \u00fanica aerol\u00ednea de bajo coste que vuela a\/desde Heathrow, donde realiza conexiones para British Airways. Vale decir que tambi\u00e9n vuela a Gatwick.<\/p>\n<p>Respecto a las conexiones, desde 2010 las ofrece v\u00eda Barcelona para la gran mayor\u00eda de sus vuelos, y desde 2013 Roma tambi\u00e9n opera como hub para vuelos en conexi\u00f3n. Durante las conexiones en Barcelona, Vueling ofrece algunos descuentos y vales para comprar en las tiendas del Sky Centre de Barcelona. Adem\u00e1s, desde 2011 tambi\u00e9n realiza conexiones para vuelos intercontinentales de Iberia y otras aerol\u00edneas asociadas de la alianza Oneworld (a la que pertenece Iberia) como LAN Airlines, American Airlines o British Airways. Desde 2014 ha comenzado a operar rutas en c\u00f3digo compartido con British Airways.<\/p>\n<p>Tal y como hacen todas las compa\u00f1\u00edas de bajo costo, y actualmente muchas aerol\u00edneas tradicionales, cobra por cada maleta que se factura. Tambi\u00e9n realiza asignaci\u00f3n de asientos. Para ello el check-in on-line puede ser realizado desde el momento de la compra del billete y hasta cuatro horas antes de la salida del vuelo, aunque no est\u00e1 disponible en todos los aeropuertos.<\/p>\n<p>El servicio de catering para las clases Basic y Optimun es del tipo venta a bordo, evidentemente\u00a0con cargo. S\u00f3lo los pasajeros que viajen en la clase Excellence, obtienen catering y bebida gratuitos durante el vuelo.<\/p>\n<p>Por otra parte, y gracias a un acuerdo con la empresa Hoteles Catalonia, la compa\u00f1\u00eda ofrece un servicio de hospedaje con su propio hotel, en el n\u00famero 550 de la Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes de Barcelona. El Prat<\/h2>\n<p>La principal base de operaciones de Vueling es el aeropuerto de El Prat de Barcelona, donde contar\u00e1 a finales de 2014 con 50 aviones basados all\u00ed. Esto implica siete aeronaves m\u00e1s en 2013. Un an\u00e1lisis de la red de rutas indica que volar\u00e1 a m\u00e1s de 130 ciudades en 36 paises diferentes, ofreciendo casi 300 rutas.<\/p>\n<p>La sumatoria de nuevos destinos es permanente: Tall\u00edn (Estonia), Tesal\u00f3nica (Grecia), Oporto (Portugal), Varsovia (Polonia) o Dakar (Senegal), son las nuevas ciudades que servir\u00e1 la empresa. Aunque a primera vista la apertura de nuevas rutas parece una constante de este \u00faltimo tiempo, cada nuevo servicio abierto ha sido internamente muy bien estudiado previamente, lo que les da a los ejecutivos de la compa\u00f1\u00eda la certeza de no cometer grandes errores. Vale tambi\u00e9n aclarar que no todos los destinos anunciados se sirven todo el a\u00f1o (muchos son estacionales), ni hay vuelos todos los d\u00edas de la semana a determinados lugares.<\/p>\n<p>La posici\u00f3n de Vueling en El Prat es especialmente s\u00f3lida, ya que tiene el 37 % de cuota de mercado, tres veces m\u00e1s que la segunda aerol\u00ednea (Ryanair con un 12%) y algo m\u00e1s de cuatro veces la tercera (EasyJet con el 8%).<\/p>\n<p>Su objetivo es seguir creciendo en Barcelona, abriendo nuevas rutas y reforzando algunas de las frecuencias ya existentes, como Roma (Italia), Par\u00eds (Fracia) , Mil\u00e1n (Italia) o Mosc\u00fa (Rusia). Desde la ciudad condal alcanza destinos tan ex\u00f3ticos como distantes: Kazan, Tel Aviv, Reykjavik y Banjul. Esto se enmarca en una estrategia operacional de volar a destinos dentro de un radio m\u00e1ximo de cuatro horas y 45 minutos de vuelo.<\/p>\n<p>Prestando atenci\u00f3n los n\u00fameros que ofrece la empresa sobre su operatoria en Catalu\u00f1a, se observa que las instalaciones aeroportuarias podr\u00edan qued\u00e1rsele peque\u00f1as m\u00e1s pronto que tarde. Seg\u00fan c\u00e1lculos de AENA, el aeropuerto de Barcelona tiene una capacidad de hasta 55 millones de pasajeros anuales, repartidos en 33 millones\/a\u00f1o en la T1 y 22 millones\/a\u00f1o en la T2. Dado que Vueling opera desde El Prat con el modelo de hub, necesita estar en la T1 que dispone del sistema de conexi\u00f3n de maletas para dar servicio a los pasajeros en tr\u00e1nsito. Quien llegue a Fiumicino por estos d\u00edas ver\u00e1 una terminal literalmente empapelada con la publicidad de Vueling. La l\u00ednea a\u00e9rea apuesta por Roma-Fiumicino como segundo hub en Europa, convirti\u00e9ndose as\u00ed en el extra\u00f1o caso de ser una compa\u00f1\u00eda a\u00e9rea con dos hubs europeos.<\/p>\n<p>La aerol\u00ednea, operar\u00e1 durante la temporada alta de verano a su m\u00e1xima capacidad en Italia. Para ello, la compa\u00f1\u00eda volar\u00e1 sobre un total de 33 rutas, de las que 24 son nuevas de este a\u00f1o. Para poder servir esas rutas se han ido desplazando mensualmente a Roma m\u00e1s aviones hasta llegar a tener 7\u00a0m\u00e1quinas basadas all\u00ed (durante el verano europeo ser\u00e1n 9). Con un total de once aviones operando desde Italia, dar\u00e1 servicio a diferentes rutas entre 16 ciudades italianas y el conjunto de Europa.<\/p>\n<p>Un ejemplo de la operatoria italiana son los cuatro vuelos diarios que ya funcionan entre ciudades como Roma y Catania, Roma y Palermo o Roma y Tur\u00edn, entre otros. Por otra parte se han reforzado las frecuencias desde Barcelona con Mil\u00e1n y Roma.<\/p>\n<p>Pero no todo son alegr\u00edas en Italia: la compa\u00f1\u00eda de bandera, desde hace a\u00f1os ahogada por sus deudas y conflictos gremiales, ha acusado el golpe. El resultado de ello es que el d\u00eda a d\u00eda en los aeropuertos italianos se le hace complicado a Vueling, ya que sufre las prioridades injustificadas de las que goza Alitalia para muchos servicios aeroportuarios, que se entiende deben prestarse en igualdad de condiciones a todos los operadores<sup><a href=\"#_ftn1_5067\" name=\"_ftnref1_5067\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/sup><a href=\"#_ftn1_5067\" name=\"_ftnref1_5067\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Las perspectivas, a priori, son muy interesantes: por los esfuerzos que hace Vueling para posicionarse, y por la situaci\u00f3n de la empresa estatal italiana. En cuanto a lo primero, otra de las acciones emprendidas por la compa\u00f1\u00eda es operar sus vuelos entre Italia y el Reino Unido con c\u00f3digos compartidos con British Airways. En cuanto a la situaci\u00f3n de Alitalia, esta es cr\u00edtica se mire por donde se mire. Si el acuerdo con Etihad se concreta, la italiana\u00a0deber\u00e1 reducir capacidad. Pero si no se concreta, tambi\u00e9n deber\u00e1 ajustarse y reducir capacidad. En ambos casos Vueling podr\u00eda salir ganando.<\/p>\n<h2>La flota<\/h2>\n<p>Vueling ha basado su negocio en la operaci\u00f3n del A320 en diversas variantes. Inicio sus operaciones en 2004 con solo dos aviones, y actualmente dispone de 90 m\u00e1quinas. La mayor\u00eda de ellas rentadas en condiciones dry lease a diversos lessors, aunque hay excepciones. Ente ellas est\u00e1n los A320 aquillados a la lituana Avion Express donde parte de la tripulaci\u00f3n es de dicha empresa y parte de la propia Vueling (que no quiere perder el contacto directo con sus clientes). El mercado franc\u00e9s es importante, tanto tur\u00edsticamente como comercialmente. Durante muchos a\u00f1os, el viajero franc\u00e9s ha estado prisionero de l\u00edneas a\u00e9reas anticuadas y caras, o nuevas y fastidiosas.\u00a0 El particular modelo de Vueling deber\u00eda tener un gran mercado all\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n es llamativa la estacionalidad de la compa\u00f1\u00eda, si se la compara con otras <em>low cost<\/em>. Vueling\u00a0se ve obligada a reducir su capacidad en un 40% durante los meses de invierno. Este es un tema que que requiere estudio y evaluaci\u00f3n de distintas alternativas y mercados, entre ellos el turismo del esqu\u00ed, el turismo n\u00f3rdico a las islas Canarias o el impulso de la clase Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Para 2015 se espera alcanzar una flota de 100 aviones. Entre ellos se aguarda la llegada de los cinco nuevos A321, que la empresa cambi\u00f3 por sendos pedidos existentes de A320. Esto le admitir\u00e1 aumentar capacidad y reconfigurar frecuencias. La incorporaci\u00f3n de estos aviones, los m\u00e1s grandes de la familia, est\u00e1 pensada dentro de una estrategia de optimizaci\u00f3n de recursos para servir determinados destinos que ya cuentan con varias frecuencias diarias. A su vez, la llegada de aviones propios, le permite a la aerol\u00ednea ahorrar algunos costos que trae aparejado el trabajo con los lessors.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque Vueling es una empresa independiente, pertenece al grupo IAG, y parte de las estrategias generales le afectan. Hasta ahora ha sacado beneficios aprovechando el poder de compra del grupo y negociando mejores condiciones para la incorporaci\u00f3n de aeronaves nuevas. Tambi\u00e9n se ha beneficiado la operaci\u00f3n en c\u00f3digo compartido con Iberia y British Airways, am\u00e9n de aprovechar y posicionarse muy fuertemente en el mercado espa\u00f1ol del corto y medio radio, operatoria que Iberia est\u00e1 dejando de lado a favor del largo recorrido.<\/p>\n<p>La expansi\u00f3n de Vueling continuar\u00e1, seg\u00fan las previsiones que maneja la compa\u00f1\u00eda. Aunque externamente la empresa brinda una imagen de crecimiento muy activo, a la hora de ampliar rutas, flota, etc\u00e9tera, su equipo de rutas busca minuciosamente las oportunidades, pero es m\u00e1s bien conservadora.<\/p>\n<p>Su permanente pol\u00edtica empresaria de contenci\u00f3n y reducci\u00f3n de la base de costes tambi\u00e9n se ha demostrado exitosa, estando focalizados en cuatro grandes \u00e1reas: mantenimiento, handling, flota y \u00abvarios\u00bb.
